Travel Router Deals: Pocket Wi-Fi 6 and 7 Compared
A travel router sits between you and untrusted networks: it joins hotel Wi-Fi or a wired port, then rebroadcasts a private network all your devices already know. Check three things. First, how you will connect: all models here repeat Wi-Fi and use Ethernet, but captive hotel portals are handled better by some firmware. Second, VPN: if you tunnel home or through a provider, compare the published VPN throughput, which varies widely. Third, power: pocket models run from USB-C, so one charger or a power bank covers router and phone. A travel router is not a cellular hotspot; it needs an existing connection to share.

Travel router questions
- Why not just use my phone's hotspot?
- A hotspot burns mobile data and battery, and every device must rejoin each new network. A travel router reuses the venue's connection, keeps one private network your devices already know, and adds firewall and VPN control that hotspots lack.
- Does a travel router work with hotel captive portals?
- Yes: connect the router to the hotel network, open the portal page once, and every device behind the router is online. The OpenWrt-based GL.iNet models make this flow straightforward; it is a core use case rather than a workaround.
- What does cellular mean for these devices?
- The routers listed here have no SIM slot. Some accept a USB phone tether or USB modem, which the specifications note as tethering support. If you need a device with built-in mobile data, that is a cellular hotspot, a different product category we do not currently list.
- Is Wi-Fi 7 worth it in a travel router?
- Rarely for hotel use, where the venue uplink is the bottleneck. It pays off when you use the 2.5G Ethernet port in serviced apartments or offices, or want the fastest possible link between your own devices in the room.
