Wi-Fi Adapter Deals: USB and PCIe Upgrades Compared

An adapter upgrades one computer's wireless rather than the whole network: the right buy when your router is modern but your desktop or laptop still talks Wi-Fi 4 or 5. Check three things. First, the interface: a PCIe card suits a desktop you can open and includes external antennas, while USB works on any machine, laptop included, with zero disassembly. Second, the standard: match your router's generation; a Wi-Fi 6E adapter only reaches the 6 GHz band if the router has it too. Third, operating system support, which for 6 GHz currently means Windows 11 on the models listed here.

Adapter buying questions

USB or PCIe: which adapter type should I pick?
PCIe for a desktop you can open: better antennas, no cable clutter, and Bluetooth on the TP-Link cards here. USB for laptops, mini PCs or any machine you will not open; modern USB 3 adapters carry Wi-Fi 6 speeds without trouble.
Will a Wi-Fi 6E adapter speed up my old router?
No. The link runs at whatever both ends share, so a 6E adapter on a Wi-Fi 5 router gives Wi-Fi 5 speeds. Upgrade the adapter to match a better router, not to outrun it; if the router is the older half, start there.
Do these adapters work on macOS or Linux?
The models here officially support Windows; the ASUS USB-AX56 and TP-Link cards list Windows 10 and 11, and 6 GHz operation requires Windows 11. Linux support depends on kernel drivers and macOS is generally unsupported, so check before buying for those systems.
Does Bluetooth come with these adapters?
The TP-Link PCIe cards include Bluetooth, version 5.3 on current TXE75E hardware, wired to a USB header on your motherboard. USB Wi-Fi adapters here are Wi-Fi only.
