Overview
The ASUS RT-BE86U is a Wi-Fi 7 router using dual-band (2.4 + 5 GHz) operation, with no 6 GHz band. It has 5 Ethernet ports including a 10 Gbps port, 2 USB ports, and supports wired backhaul.
Who it suits
This router is suited to users who want a fast wired 10 Gbps connection for a single device like a NAS or PC, without needing 6 GHz Wi-Fi. It also suits ASUS AiMesh users looking to add or build a mesh network using AiMesh-compatible nodes.
Reasons to consider it
The 10 Gbps Ethernet port supports high-speed wired connections, and 5 total Ethernet ports allow for multiple wired devices. Wired backhaul support and AiMesh compatibility make it suitable for expanding coverage with additional ASUS AiMesh nodes. The router also supports multiple modes, including access point, media bridge, and repeater, offering flexibility in network setup.
Limitations and compatibility checks
This router does not support the 6 GHz band, which may limit performance in newer Wi-Fi 7 devices that rely on that band for higher speeds. It is also locked into the ASUS AiMesh ecosystem, meaning it cannot mesh with routers from other brands.
