Outdoor units are weather-sealed radios built to live on a wall, pole or patio and push coverage into gardens, terraces and driveways. Check three things before buying. First, power: most outdoor units take PoE, power over the network cable, which means one cable run and no outdoor socket; confirm whether an injector is included. Second, how it joins your network: some units extend a specific mesh ecosystem while others are standalone access points that need a cable back to your router. Third, the IP rating, which tells you the enclosure's dust and water protection.

Outdoor Wi-Fi questions
- Do I need PoE for an outdoor access point?
- PoE sends power through the same Ethernet cable that carries data, so you avoid weatherproof power sockets entirely. If you cannot run a cable at all, only mesh-based outdoor units that connect wirelessly, such as the Deco X50-Outdoor or eero Outdoor 7 in wireless mode, are practical.
- Access point, mesh unit or bridge: which outdoor device?
- To cover an outdoor area, either works: a cabled access point gives the steadiest performance, while an outdoor mesh unit joins your existing system without a cable. To link a detached building, you want a point-to-point bridge, which is a different device class we do not currently list.
- What does the IP rating mean?
- The two digits rate dust and water protection. IP65 resists rain and dust well; IP66 and IP68 are sealed harder. All units listed here state their rating in the verified specifications, and all are built for permanent outdoor mounting within their rating.
- Will one outdoor unit cover my whole garden?
- Coverage depends on walls, mounting height and interference, so treat any area claim with caution. Mount the unit outside, high and central to the space you care about; a unit indoors behind a wall loses much of its reach.
