Overview
The AVM FRITZ!Box 6860 5G is a 5G SIM router built for indoor or outdoor mounting, supporting Wi-Fi 6 across 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. It handles 5G SA and NSA with dual carrier aggregation, plus 4G LTE Advanced Pro Cat 19, and includes VoLTE and VoNR telephony via a single nano-SIM slot.
Who it suits
This router is suited to users who need a cellular broadband connection rather than a fixed-line setup, particularly where outdoor mounting for signal reasons is useful. It also suits households already using or planning to use AVM FRITZ! Mesh devices, since it integrates into that ecosystem.
Reasons to consider it
It supports current 5G standards including SA and NSA modes with dual carrier aggregation, giving flexibility across different carrier network types. The single Ethernet port runs at 1 Gbps and supports wired backhaul, and the unit can be powered over that same LAN port via PoE+, simplifying cabling for outdoor or remote placement. It also functions as a DECT base station, useful for cordless phone integration.
Limitations and compatibility checks
There is no 6 GHz band support, so this is a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 device rather than Wi-Fi 6E or 7. It has only one Ethernet port, which limits direct wired device connections without an external switch, and mesh expansion is tied to AVM's own FRITZ! ecosystem.
