Overview
The ASUS RT-AX86U Pro is a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router with 3x3 2.4 GHz and 4x4 5 GHz radios. It includes 6 Ethernet ports with speeds up to 2.5 Gbps, 2 USB ports, and support for wired backhaul.
Who it suits
This router is suited to busy households that need multiple wired connections alongside Wi-Fi 6 wireless performance. It also suits users who want flexibility to run it as a router, access point, media bridge, repeater, or AiMesh node.
Reasons to consider it
It offers 6 Ethernet ports with up to 2.5 Gbps speed, which is useful for wired devices like NAS boxes or gaming PCs. Wired backhaul support means it can be paired with another AiMesh-compatible ASUS unit for a stronger connection between nodes. The multiple supported modes give flexibility depending on how the network needs to be set up.
Limitations and compatibility checks
There is no 6 GHz band, so this router is limited to 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz only. It also has no PoE, meaning connected PoE devices would need a separate injector. AiMesh is an ASUS-specific system, so it will not interoperate with mesh products from other brands.
